What is the source of the light in your life? In other words, what is it that keeps you going even in the midst of darkness? Is it your family? Your kids? Your religious beliefs? Non-religious beliefs? Your inner ambitions and/or goals? Or maybe just faith itself and knowing that, “this, too, shall pass?” Inevitably, we will have to weather a lot of tough storms throughout our lives. Many people have folded under the pressure that these times put on them. My message to you all is, find your source(s) of light. Something that will keep you focused despite the darkness that may be surrounding you at any given point in your life. With this light, we can never be knocked off our square. This light will be your strength, your hope, and could be your saving grace. This light will give you direction and serve as a solid foundation to stand upon. Without light, it is very easy to get lost in darkness and some never find their way back. Always focus on the light.
I’m going to introduce you all to the 3 C’s of decision making that might help you. Carefully calculate the cost. You see, a lot of us make very impulsive decisions that sound good at the time, but what about the long term? Rather than look back disappointed in hindsight, we need to look with our foresight to ensure we’re making the proper decision. This will help eliminate those regretful decisions that tend to get us in trouble or even just to make a better overall decision than you would have made, otherwise. When confronted with a tough decision, weigh the costs and the benefits. What will this do for me in the long run and what are the repercussions if I do/don’t do it? When we make decisions in the heat of the moment, that’s when we tend to screw up. Because either we don’t have time to, or because our emotions at the time cloud our better judgment Stop for a second, breathe, and carefully go over the problem in your head. Is this the right decison? Or is it simply the right now decision? Think…
Things happen in life. Things that are totally out of our control. At times, we allow these things to stagnate us and hinder us from moving forward. Or, we allow distractions to get the best of us, causing us to get sidetracked for a period of time. We even allow our own doubts, fears, and insecurities to come between us and whatever it is we’re hoping to get accomplished. The key to overcoming each of these obstacles is to stay focused. Develop a sort of tunnel vision and only acknowledge what you CHOOSE to. You might be asking, “how the hell do you CHOOSE to acknowledge something?” By choosing what we acknowledge, we are keeping full control of our lives and not being stagnated by external forces. Nothing can hinder our growth if we don’t allow it to. Always be consciously aware of what’s going on around you so that you can handle it accordingly rather than letting it control you. We may stop and smell the roses and venture off our paths from time to time, but never lose sight of the bigger picture.
Are you a consumer or a producer? The answer to this question lies in what you do with the money that you make. Are you eager to receive this week’s paycheck to buy some new material things or to save it and put it away? If you’re saving it, what are you saving it for? I know a lot of people who are buying a new pair of $100+ shoes weekly. My question to you is, why? Why are you so quick to willingly give away your money? These are the times that we live in. People don’t know the power of a dollar. How about this…instead of buying that fresh name brand shirt, why don’t you come up with your own design? Be it a logo, a picture, a slogan, catch phrase, etc. and start wearing ONLY that. In the long run this would be cheaper than buying some name brand clothing every week, anyways. Before you know it, people will ask you where you got that shirt from or how can they get one. See how that works? Now, I’d be lying if I said it’s really that easy, but sometimes it is. Come up with something new and innovative and throw it on a t-shirt. Is there some new slang that’s starting to spread like wildfire around your town? Throw it on a t-shirt and start wearing it. Hustle up enough money until you can invest that into something else. Maybe even a full-fledged t-shirt or clothing line since you already have some clientele in that area. This is one of the privileges of living in a country like America, anybody and everybody can make something of themselves. This is the land of the hustle and grind. People from all walks of life have climbed out of the gutter and became successful. Many immigrants came to America with nothing but a few dollars and the clothes on their back and lived to tell the story to their grandchildren years later. I suppose it all comes down to who you want to be and what you want your story to be when you pass.
All my young people, we need to be more mindful of the individuals we choose to look up to at a young age. Our so-called role models. Unfortunately, we’re not lucky enough to have much control over this as children, but as we get older we begin to have a better awareness of right/wrong and good/bad. Look beyond the superficial and really see what a person’s character is like. Don’t focus so much on how many women/men they get, how much money they have, what clothes are, how popular they are, how famous they are, or how fancy their cars are. It is their character that will have the most influence on you. Their beliefs, morals, and values will rub off on you as you grow up. Be very careful who you choose to be your role model. For the people in the older generations, we need to be more mindful of the image we portray to the youth as well. Not only that, but how we act and the things we say as well. Like it or not, you might be a role model to someone. There’s too much misguidance in the younger generations today we all need to play our part and set them straight because, as I’ve said before, these kids are the future. Take the time to sit down and teach these youngsters. If you see one doing bad, try to take him/her under your wing. Each one, teach one.
A lot of us are so caught up in other people’s opinions and approval that we have little to no control over the things listed above. But honestly, what does their perception of us really matter? What do they do for you? We can’t spend our lives trying to appeal to everyone because it’s not going to happen. Be your own man/woman.
